Shaun Ray and his work at Nevill Hall Hospital

Shaun Ray is an artist who uses music as the subject matter of his work.  He translates the rhythm and the emotion of instrumental sound, into shape, pattern and colour.  This unique approach to painting intensifies the artist’s feelings of wellbeing and is the sole reason why he paints.

Previously, Shaun worked as a Theatre Designer, creating set and costume for many successful London productions.  He then took his design skills into the classroom where he remained for over two decades as a Subject Leader of Art.  In more recent years he has been a full-time carer, which gave him a need and an opportunity to study for an MA in Art, Health and Wellbeing.

In 2017, Shaun began work at Chepstow Community Hospital with participants diagnosed with early onset dementia, and with the Royal National Institute for the Blind (Cymru) with participants who are sensory impaired.  ‘musicpainting’ has been a real success and many more workshops are planned for 2018.   Please visit the main corridors in Chepstow Hospital to see examples of the paintings produced by these groups.

The group meet in the Salkeld Day Room at Chepstow Community Hospital every Monday from 2-4pm. Workshops are planned for Severn View Care Home in Chepstow on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
